While We Were Sleeping…

Last night I was reading this article on Buzzflash.com and suddenly pieces started falling into place.  As the article states:

There is a method to this madness of chaos and obstructionism that is the hallmark of modern Republicanism.

It is to do politically what Naomi Klein detailed in her economic analysis in the “Shock Doctrine”; it is to so bollix and confuse and make feel vulnerable the displaced white working and middle class that they will turn to authoritarian leadership out of fear.

Fear is the cudgel of the GOP leadership across the nation, and the ”victimization” of white people (particularly the white male) is the emotional drumbeat of the right wing media echo chamber.

Together, they have converged to ignite the Townhall Terrorists and create an incipient threat of violence and revolt against democracy in order to establish a white rightwing tyrannical corporate government with a GOP leadership.

The article sums it all up in the following paragraph:

The purpose of the Townhall Terrorists is to do the work of the corporations in protecting their de facto control over our government by creating chaos, confusion and fear.

And with that I am left with the realization that in 2000 when the Republican flew staffers down to Florida to riot and create chaos during the recount, that that was not the coup, that was just the trial run.

Today we are experiencing the real coup.  The Democrats hold a super majority in Congress and the Senate.  Voted in by the people in an undisputed election through the hard work of the democrats and the general population.  The will of the people is for a move of this country to the progressive future the Democrats promised us during the election.

Instead we are left with a Democratic party that has become all too aware that their real masters are not the voters, but the corporations that fund their campaigns.  Without those corporate dollars filling the Democratic coffers the Democrats know that they won’t be able to afford advertising and marketing to counter the Republican dollars.

Meanwhile the Republicans, always a tool of the wealthy elite, have worked hard to seize total control of the media over the last 30 years.  Turning to mush the brains of a nation.  Teaching bizzaro world values in which to be wealthy is to be moral, and to be poor is to be profane.  The Republicans and the conservative owned corporate media  have aligned to take the 25% of the population that is prone to an authoritarian mindset and enlist them in their service.

So, where are we today?  The Republicans and the corporations have awakened the 25% that had been dormant while recieiving their programming from the corporate media:

And now Rush Limbaugh has been telling his followers that the Democrats are using Hitler’s playbook:

And here we are today the authoritarian right own a large swath of the media, without any sort of equal counterpart on the left.  A self identified Limbaugh Republican can spend his whole day and night listening to all right wing radio, and viewing all right wing TV, without ever hearing the opposing sides view point.

Could things be anymore ripe for an authoritarian power grab?

That 25% percent has abandoned reason and is therefore not capable of being reasoned with.   That 25% is been awakened by those would like to use them for their facist goals.  That 25% are the people showing up at Democratic town hall meetings being disruptive and threatening violence.  That 25% are the people threatening to assasinate Obama.  That 25% are the people of the Birther movement.

It is that 25% that cannot be moved by peaceful protest.  Peaceful protest does not work against an enemy that doesn’t see you as human.  These people are going to be the goon squads beating down lefties who refuse to defend themselves. That 25% is going to strike fear into the hearts of the middle 50% of this nation that does not identify as left or right.  And who is going to wield that fear of the 50%?  What rational voice is going to reach that middle 50%?  Not the lefts, we don’t have a stake in the media.  No, it’ll be right, standing by, ready to capitalize on the fear created by their own fascist tactics.

Yes indeed.  We are standing on the edge.  Either we go down fighting or we allow the right’s 30 year strategy to seize control of our nation to come to fruition.
